Self-Attestation Oxymoron Organization (SAOO)

A Self-Attestation Oxymoron Organization (SAOO) is an organization whose core product is a Self-Attestation Oxymoron: it verifies, judges, issues, signs and stores its own assurance claims, and sells them to others as independent proof.

What it means

A Self-Attestation Oxymoron is a single claim. An SAOO is a business built on producing them.

Any organization can make an SAO now and then. An SAOO makes them as its product. Its customers do not buy evidence. They buy the organization’s verdict about something, sealed so that it looks like evidence.

How to recognize one

An organization is an SAOO when, for the assurance it sells:

  1. It runs the checks with its own methods, often undisclosed.
  2. It judges the result with its own thresholds and scoring.
  3. It issues the credential, certificate or report.
  4. It is the trust anchor, signing with its own keys or its own certificate authority.
  5. It keeps the record, including the raw evidence.
  6. It arbitrates disputes about its own decisions.
  7. No independent party can reproduce or witness the decision as it was made.

The more of these it holds, the deeper the oxymoron. All seven means its assurance cannot be checked from outside.

Why the term is needed

The Proof Economy separates three questions: was the input real (origin), did the check work (efficacy), and was the record changed afterward (integrity). An SAOO usually answers only the last one, with strong cryptography, and markets it as if it answered all three.

That gap grows as SAOOs move into automated and agentic workflows such as AI agents that authenticate, authorize and move money. Each relying party that accepts an SAOO’s output inherits its miss rate without being able to measure it.

What it is not

How an SAOO stops being one

Give up at least one role to an independent party with real access: an outside witness for the decision, published and reproducible test methods, or independent Proof of Efficacy testing of the checks it sells.
